When shopping for coats, what’s the first thing you look at? Naturally, the physical appearance, like the style and the cut would be one of the first things you see. Especially after you try it on, you see how it sits on you. Whether it’s good for layering, etc.
While all those factors are important to how long you’ll be able to keep the coat in your wardrobe. There is a more important factor that you’d need to look at for practicality sake. The fabric composition, this determines whether or not this coat will keep you warm.
Many accessible fashion joints have these luxurious looking coats, that look like they’re wool, but when you actually take a closer look at the tag. It’s not, it might be polyester or viscose or maybe a combination of both. In this case, no matter how thick this coat may be, don’t count on it to keep you warm. Or if it says it’s wool blend, double check how many percent of wool you’re getting. Especially if you feel the price is on the low side, more often than not, you are paying for what you get.
Next is lining, is the coat fully lined, half lined or not lined at all? Lining provides an additional layer of insulation, arguably not much as lining is often in summer fabrics. Besides that, lining also helps maintain the shape of the jacket, it keeps the shape and helps you wear it better as compared to an unlined coat. However, for wool coats you have to make sure that it is lined because wool tends to snag on other fabrics and this may cause it to be inconvenient when putting it on or taking it off.
If you’re looking to get a puffer jacket, it’s the same. If you are not getting 80-90% down, then it’s probably not going to keep you very warm during winter. We definitely see an improvement and many accessible fashion brands do include a percentage of down in their jackets, but please don’t forget to check the composition before paying for anything.
