Sick of your back-to-office looks already?
Here are some tips for fresh outfits.
It’s a daily struggle with trying to get dressed and figuring you have no options in your wardrobe but that usually isn’t the case. You are more often bored of your outfit rotation than you are out of options. With about 70% of our time spent in the office, we thought we’d provide some tips on how you can get un-bored of your wardrobe.
Choose a piece that you rarely wear and style an outfit around it.
You know that one pair of pants you got that you never wore. Or the jacket you thought you liked but had trouble styling. Usually, these pieces clutter at least 40% of your wardrobe. Choose one of these ‘problem’ pieces and work around it.
The trick with styling these pieces will be to use your wardrobe staples to complete the look. The pants you never wore, style them with your favourite oversized shirt, throw on some chunky accessories or stack some fine ones and complete it with your trusty mules or loafers. This works because these pieces are staples because you are comfortable in them and they are easy to wear.
A bright green sweater like this is best styled with wardrobe staples so the focus remains on it. The sequined floral jumper would be perfect under a neutral coloured oversized blazer to make it a little more casual and fun.
Unorthodox style pairings
Veer slightly away from your ‘safe’ options and choose a style pairing that is not your first choice. Usually, you have a shirt dress and you’d wear it solo. Why do that when you can layer a skirt under it and can change the whole look? I would recommend playing around with textures for this.
A sheer skirt paired with the poplin shirt dress creates dimension. If the sheer skirt is not your pick, a pleated skirt will have the same effect. If you have a skirt with shine or embellishments, they work the same way. Adding dimension to the relatively flat poplin look.
Other examples
- Swap your regular oversized jacket for a cropped version, it elongates your legs and instantly looks edgier.
- Add a colourful sweatshirt/pullover over your jacket
- Instead of a shirt/jacket, what about a vest
- Swap out your traditional slacks for dark-coloured nylon cargo pants
- Style your dress over a pair of pants
Styling dresses or skirts over pants are a sure way to spice things up. You could start with easy to style pieces like black voluminous skirt over denim and experiment from there.
Adding a pop of colour to your usual outfits
Usually, you’d style your oversized jacket with a white shirt and maybe neutral coloured trousers. But the options are endless because the rest of your outfit is very ‘traditional’ you can play around with the colour of your bottom. Swapping out the neutral-toned pairing will inject a breath of fresh air into your outfit rotation.
You can also swap out a ‘safe’ shoe choice for something more adventurous. Instead of a neutral-toned shoe, you can pick a complementary colour that pops. So if you are wearing classic black or white, any bright shade will work. If you are working with grey, hot pink is a nice complementary colour. Navy and khaki work with orange.
With these small changes, it will affect the whole attitude towards you dressing for work, there are fresh ideas yet you’re not going out and buying a ton. You’re working with what you have and likely underuse.
