Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams

The Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition was unveiled in Tokyo, following its success in Paris at Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The exhibition has travelled to many cities, from New York to Doha to Chengdu, it has made its rounds to showcase the mind behind the brand and the craftsmanship this French house possesses.

Now showing at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo until 28 May 2023, this exhibition will also highlight the ties that Dior has with Japanese culture. It will also feature a new scenographic narrative designed by Japanese architect, Shohei Shigematsu as a tribute to their culture.

Curated by Florence Müller, it will feature influences in Mr Christian Dior’s world, like his love for his gardens and his fascination with Japan and its culture. It will also show audiences a peek into the archives of the couture house. Each section in the exhibition will feature different interior designs paying homage to various Japanese elements. There are rooms covered in paper inspired by Shoji screens and rooms inspired by tatami rooms separated by sliding doors

This will also be a good vantage point to look at the creative directors that came after Christian Dior, including iconic works by John Galliano and Raf Simons, with their looks paying homage to Japan and its culture. You’ll also be able to physically walk through the brand’s evolution through time and view the brand’s fluid creative vision.

This exhibition showcases the congruent approaches both the French and Japanese have towards ideas like fashion, art and design. Their mutual respect for each other’s culture and the value of craft within their society can be seen clearly translated into the physical space.
